Hints of what will be a thriving commercial area in the future have arrived in the Ashburton Business Park, as work on its first resident, Canterbury Longrun Roofing”s building, gets underway.

The company anticipates moving on site in November and will be joined next year by Electricity Ashburton. The lines company plans to relocate its offices to the estate and consents for the large-scale project are likely to be lodged in September.

The business park has been developed by the Ashburton District Council and while it may be running a little behind target with sales, council chief executive Brian Lester said there was a good level of interest in sites.

With a contract on the table and three more businesses looking at the estate as a probable option, Mr Lester said he was comfortable with where sales were sitting.

“The interest is sound but once we get some development out there, that will be the best form of promotion we can have.”

Because many Christchurch manufacturers were not badly affected by the February 22 earthquake, Mr Lester said there had not been an influx of businesses wanting to relocate, but there was some inquiry.

Discussions were still progressing towards the relocation of Ashburton rail shunting yard to the business estate, but until there were more businesses established there, the issue was not urgent, Mr Lester said.

“With this it’s a matter of when, not if.”
